Brilliant and a true-blue son of the motherland. A very calm and pleasant looking man with strong conviction and integrity. Chang KMT was a corrupted and Western pro. Mao was remembered but had disastrous policy. If only Zhou took over Mao, China could be well ahead earlier.
Zhou was a brilliant 2 nd in charge. During his terminal cancer stage, he still slog hard knowing his days are numbered until his body and mind couldn’t withstand. Though Mao nearly caused disaster with his 2 policy, he actually save China during the early days before the Great Leap Forward. Deng was the chief architect of China economic miracle. Without a strong leader like him, u wouldn’t see the present China. President Xi , right now, is the one who really makes China into a superpower with his decade policy, although it is still too early to tell. So , China was lucky enough to get many great, competent leaders to propel the country forward.
Zhou had to walk a tightrope when dealing with Mao. Everyone had to. Getting on Mao’s bad side could be fatal as was the case with Pang Dehuai, Liu Shaoqi, and even Lin Biao. Even Deng Xioping was purged THREE TIMES by Mao for being a “capitalist roader.” He survived only because Zhou protected him.
Stating or implying that Zhou Enlai was somehow paralyzed by fear of Mao is a gross mischaracterization. Zhou did the best he could in dealing with Mao’s toxic personality. Zhou Enlai did an enormous amount of good for China for which he rightly deserves great credit and respect. Please give it to him.
As other commenters have said, China would have done better with less Mao and more 'Joe', as the media of the 1970s used to call Zhou.
Zhou moderated Mao's domestic economic programs where he could, but Mao's need to have his way was overpowering to most other old comrades. Mao was the revolution's star, and got all the good press.
The popular cult of Maoism begat the Cultural Revolution, which ended Maoism by showing the Gang of Four was actually controlling Mao.
Zhou was merely one man, Mao too... as well a Xi Jinping, Hu Jintao... Yung Zhang, Qi Shi Huang... and the list goes on and on. what you folks ain't get is the Chinese.
So many Chinese experts now. No one really knows what goes behind the scenes of the CCP! Many western experts seeks book fame in alliance with so called chines expert guru! Keyword is “seeking fame”. Perhaps only western person that knows the most about the CCP inner circles and workings and that of Mao himself is Edgar Snow. The American journalist who was with Mao for a very long period of time. And even he was under cat and mouse games etc.
The most bizarre thing that stumps me was how on earth did Mao, a bureaucratic figure in CCP back then vs muscles department e.g. the army, was able wrestle power from Zhou De? He was leader and head of the PLA army. I.e. the big boss!
He instructed Mao and crew (scholars such as Zhou and Deng, to do The long march, which was a suicidal mission to divert KMT direct main frontal attacks on the PLA main troops. KMT army was separated as such, with one half hong after the diversion pin pursuit of Mao smaller PLA forces etc. A game of cat and mouse etc). Miraculously both were successful, the march itself and PLA’s main army survived from full on battle in which they would have lost!!
So there we go. Can any genius or genuine Chinese guru gods tell me how the hell did Mao take over the power from Zhu De?
26Feb25:
Zhou EnLai was totally controlled , blackmailed , and tormented by Mao Zedong almost from the first year that they encountered one another .
Zhou EnLai lived in fear and dread of Mao , especially in the last half of his life . Zhou wrote letters to Mao , begging for mercy and clemency .
