Dr. Qian Xuesen is the “father of Chinese aerospace”. His research and development began in the homeland since 1956. Although Qian was not directly responsible for the development of any specific missile, rocket engine, or satellite but he personally trained the first generation of revolutionary China’s aerospace engineers.
He was Chinese first and foremost. The US was lucky to have had him. But they mistreated him badly so who can blame him for never wanting to set foot in the US ever again.
As a Chinese from Singapore, I know Qian Xueseng since young. He is a genius and return to mother land to build his nation because China been too nice and get invaded and bullied by Japan and the west.
This is so important. Wish more Americans knew Qian’s story. Qian was a true genius and the cofounder of JPL. He was treated horrible by the US government. He went back to China and propelled China’s aerospace technology.
The story of Qian Xuesen as told here, was not accurate. Qian didn't plan to move back to China prior to his arrest. In fact, he submitted the citizenship application in 1949. He had a well established career in the US, and he had tremendous respects from his collegues. But the paranoia of Communism at the time and the treatment he received during the detension and the loss of career prospect afterwards hardened his decision to move back to China. The US never found any evidence that he stole national secrets. None of the intercepted notes were classified.
The version I know isn’t wasn’t because he wanted to go back to china; he was born before the birth of PRC he was sponsored by the national government (now in Taiwan) so he was never pro communist. It was US congress labeled him as an”national security threat” because of his nationality and eventually deported him to PRC. He is credited for many things just to name two, he led the Chinese space program and his physics theory was used in DF17 missile which can bounce in near lower orbit and makes it almost impossible to intersect.
The title is very misleading. US did not lose a genius, Dr. Qian retuned to serve the motherland, China on his own will. Dr. Qian could have returned to China way earlier, but he was fed up with the corrupted KMT government. He decided to return to where he belonged (China) immediately after New China was founded. He was a hundred percent patriot Chinese, heart and soul.
That's not considered a "grudge" it's considered a "deadly lesson learned," as like the years of humiliation for China.
China, never ever forgets, but wise enough to never let that errode away our humanity on retaliation of revenge and war.
This is true democracy with Chinese characteristic.
It was only a short walk from Hong Kong Customs to Shenzhen. Qian Xuesen practiced with his wife and children in a hotel in Hong Kong. If they heard gunshots, Qian Xuesen would throw himself to the ground. His wife and children pressed on him and crawled towards China. They all knew how important he was to China.
There's also the story of Dr. Chien-Shiung Wu who was instrumental in the Manhattan Project. Here role has been downplayed or ignored. She was never mentioned in the movie "Oppenheimer".
Thank you for reporting. I didn't know this before. How could they torture him like that while they were accusing China has "human rights" problems. OMG.
The affection between Dr Qian and his wife is one of the great love stories of our age. We still celebrate him as our greatest rocket scientist here in the states.
This man has a 'trajectory' named after him. As in, a specific path of changing missile trajectory as ICBMs 'glide' on the edge of our atmosphere as to make it insanely difficult to predict and intercept. Its one of the reasons why the Americans call it a 'hypersonic glide vehicle' instead of just a missile, cause it flies all wiggly.
It's great to learn some form of truths about Qian Xuesen from the mouth of Elon Musk directly. And I also learn some additional info that I am not aware earlier. Thank you Mr. Musk.
He studied under Theodore Von Karman, founder of the Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) in Caltech. Name the Karman Line separating the atmosphere and space.
I heard that Qian Xue Sen actually vetted Werner Von Braun ,when German scientists were rounded up after WW II and sent to the US to start the rocket developements in america.
South Africa lost a genius. If Musk has returned to South Africa, SA should have been a first class scientific giant.
In those days, people are suppose to be able to come and go to US. So don’t cry when you start persecuting Chinese scientist and technologists and they decided to return to their mother land.
Look at the labourers who build the East West railway in America. The US treated them as criminals, hounds them and murdered some. The rest were packed off and sent home.
Wrong Title: How the US Lost a Genius.
The fact should be: How the US regime was unable to keep on incarcerating Chinese Genius Qian Xueshen in the US.
But nowadays many clever Chinese people are now living in USA and contributing to Usa. About the guy mentioned returning to China he was the odd one went back China voluntarily, you got to find one or some odd one retuning but majority is still in US. I wouldnot blame Usa didnot handling well. He is willing to go home is legally .
Qian Xuesen was a true Chinese patriot and, if I were in his place, I too would reject all awards and what-have-you from the country & people who treated me so badly.
Thanks for the story about Mr. Qian.
I believe in the US, there are also a lot of people loving the USA their mother country just as Mr. Qian loved his mother country China. Please, Mr. Musk do not let these people down.
Hope more Chinese scientists be careful when they hv intention to be back to homeland.. also numerous top scientists mysterious dies in China. Not sure if this is the work of C I A.. China government needs to ensure the security of top scientists..
When your friend come over to your house and stay overnight for a few days and return home, do you describe the situation as you lost a friend? If somebody come to your house and kidnapped your son , you can say that you had lost your son, because your son was taken out of your house involuntarily.
Dr Qian attended the gathering when he visited China US government suspected him he was part of Chinese government. He was deported from US president, but DOD held him because it is dangerous yo let him go back to China. After fight the lawsuit with the US government and proved he did nothing wrong. He was house arrest for 5 years. Dr Qian went out with his wife. They were followed by cia. When he interrupted the CiA, he wife dropped the letter to her sister. Her sister lived in Europe. She forwarded the letter to his family to Chinese government and requested to deport them back to China. He had intended to apply US citizenship before these misunderstandings occurred.
Movie on this genius. Very entertaining. He is literally the "Father of China Rockets", "Father of China (Basllistic) Missile" & "Father of China Areospace". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H04ZpWmsnQU
On Trump's term Trump might be able to do amendment to revise the Constitution, in order for Elon Musk to be elected to the next term from 2028-2032, then to be relected again, to 2036. Then ha, , to lead the World
So much for a democracy country, the late Mr Lee Kuan yew prime Minister of Singapore said I never believe Democracy bring progress they have no idea how to develop a better tomorrow
Don't put usa so high on gratitude this guy was punish by USA govement for wanted to return back to china and was smuggle back so usa is not so generous and gratitude enough to be call by u people
Find the fact about it words won't changes anything from reality
But he wanted to go back from the start. Even before he was given the Guantanamo bay treatment. So how in the world could the US have kept him in a decent manner?
