I was asked a simple question: “Why do you support the Communist Party of China?” But I don't live in China. I live in the Netherlands. So perhaps the better question is: Does the Chinese government actually do a good job for the Chinese people? In this video, I explain why my own view of China changed over the years — from growing up in the Netherlands hearing one narrative about China, to looking at Chinese history, development and the enormous changes that took place within my own lifetime. I also tell the story of my grandfather, a water well in China in the 1970s, and the moment his words about the Chinese government stayed with me for decades. Then we look at the transformation of China: poverty, infrastructure, electricity, education, healthcare, life expectancy, housing, technology and living standards. The point isn't that China is perfect. The point is much simpler: If a country can transform itself on such a massive scale, shouldn't we at least ask what it did right? And instead of automatically demonizing another country, perhaps we should ask: What can we learn from them? I also discuss why I don't believe that supporting a government from another country is really the correct way to frame the question — and why I think people should judge governments by what they actually deliver for their people. This is my personal perspective and analysis based on the facts, figures and historical comparisons discussed in the video.
