That's too painful for Americans to remember and indeed most of us FORGET! 87 Reply 3 replies @raymondtjoen837 14 hours ago Since the time China existed they never attacked any country, from ancient times they sailed to Malacca and even to Nigeria and other countries in Africa and never established themselves as conquerors. It all started when Marco Polo announced that in China there were items of gold, silver, silk and spices. The UK came as a trading mission and showed interest to buy silk, tea and spices but had to pay in silver. This is similar to how Columbus discovered America and caused the extermination of the Incas. But when the UK could not afford their own lifestyle they wanted to pay in opium. Opium which the UK bought from India which caused numerous wars and as always 9 western countries joined in to conquer a piece of China which they succeeded. Hong Kong to the UK, Shanghai to Germany, Macau to Portugal. That is why the Chinese call it the century of humiliation. And because China fought against 9 countries they lost the wars and had to pay 40,000 tons of silver as war debt as compensation. So China ended up in poverty, land in ruins and debt to pay and the people suffered in poverty. Even the US was there in 1900 and 1917-1918. Do you think the Chinese will forget because the Chinese always remember what caused the suffering and pain because they have always been peaceful? 41 Reply @wongyatmun3604 15 hours ago WE SUPPORT CHINA FOR PEACE N PROGRESS😊😊😊 50 Reply @edwardkwok7279 17 hours ago Said the whole truth so correctly and clearly. 👍 68 Reply @jonihiu3954 17 hours ago Insightful. China is progressing well with its military technology. China’s military developments is about protecting the country and ensuring national security. China is protecting its sovereignty by defending itself against US hegemony. With over 790 military bases all around the world, the US can attack and invade other countries to force compliance and total submission to its whim. The fact that China is surrounded by some 40 US bases with new bases in Philippines, Australia, all the way up through the Pacific, across to Asia, to Korea and Japan and Okinawa and all aimed at the industrial heartland of China. China’s ability to innovate and develop advanced defense technologies ingenuously for its self-defense. This advancement marks a crucial step in China’s military technology, enhancing its strategic capabilities in electronic warfare. China is slowly bolstering its military capabilities and has undergone a transformative upgrade in China defense against an unfriendly country. China is not competing in the race with any countries. China has to prepare and protect itself from the belligerent US in the event of any aggressive threat from the US. China has come a long way and has been making steady progress in its defense industries to protect the country. China is not interested in the US nor care about US hegemony. China is not interested in US predominance nor is interested in US foreign policy. China is taking it all in its stride to deal with the belligerent US. 17 Reply @trekpac2 16 hours ago Your reports are really excellent summaries on a variety of important topics, put in laymen’s terms. Reply @AntiwarObserver 15 hours ago (edited) This video is mostly correct up until 5 min mark, the rest is inaccurate characterizations of China and guessing of China's planning and thinking. China's development was actually not a secret but western anti-China policies had definitely pushed China to become stronger. A lot of China's development plan never have the west in mind but Chinese people in mind. China was always there and it was only recently that the west decided to start paying attention. A lot of modern China was planned and built since the founding of the nation with the national goal of improving it's people's lives, robust economy, to build a strong nation to resist hostile forces. The apologist Western decline commentary from you should not be made in contrast of China's rise but instead caused by the western political class empire building, becoming a war economy and overrun by the oligarchies and crony Capitalism. 9 Reply 1 reply @bireswarhalder9765 6 hours ago Nicely portrayed the entire development strategy of China. One thing great about China is that their long term planning and execution is next to none. They often complete projects before schedule. These all could happen because of visionary leadership. American journalist Edgar Snow in his book "Red star over China" had written how China struggled in earlier days when labor to leaders used to wear blue Mao suits. They used hand tools only for infrastructures. Two important plans/targets, first to attain 70% self sufficiency in semiconductor chip production and catching up the USA in military might by 2027 will certainly revert the world affairs from West to East for sure. Except you miss one important point. The important point is: war is the most destructive endeavor. China has not participated in a war for over 40 years. The war against Vietnam was a limited war, telling Vietnam not to become ambitious and expand in South East Asia. No war, use all the resources to build up the economy, the education, the infrastructure, the scientific research institutions. Not only that, military build up came after the economy improved. In the 1980s, China reduced the size of their army three times. The military is expensive and a necessary evil. 2 Reply 4 replies @cheekhenliew7628 13 hours ago 假若施主不懂佛法,贫僧也略懂一些拳腳。 2 Reply @jthecut-johnnylim5075 5 hours ago Except the fact...now it's the return of Asian century! With nearly 90 Chinese naval and coast guard ships deployed, Beijing's show of force targets the island chain that spans Japan to Borneo. Taiwan condemned the drills, describing them as a threat to regional stability, and activated combat readiness. The tensions escalated following Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te’s Pacific tour, which included stops in Guam and Hawaii—moves China views as provocative. Russia is great power today, whether people accept in the west or not the reality is there. 15 layers of Western sanctions failed, and the country economy is growing, unlike the Western's economy that is in declining. China, Russia, India, and BRICS will shape the new world order for the benefits of humankind contrary to the western destructive system that the world will not accept. 72 Reply 5 replies @DianaOng-z9i 3 days ago Kishore, l share the same outrage, but l think finally there’s justice - with the coming TikTok ban, millions of American TikTok refugee are going to Red Note and discovering the reality that China is not what their mainstream media have told them - the government really takes care of the people. Life is good and much better than in America. Food is cheap, healthcare affordable, life is safe and secure, infrastructure and transportation is almost futuristic compared to America. Chinese people are free to travel, free to walk anywhere at night. They know Americans could have all these if the Govt did not spent all the billions on wars. The biggest irony is they are spending billions on anti China campaign including banning TikTok turning young users to search for alternative and discovery Red Note and truth about China that nullify all the lies and billions spent on anti China propaganda.😂 Truth and decency will prevail. 20 Reply @VictorThang-b5p 3 days ago Well done.❤❤❤ 18 Reply @singaanom3305 3 days ago Well explained prof Kishore........... 19 Reply @gunshotlagoon922 3 days ago Kishore is correct. As someone who has lived in multiple countries on multiple continents I've realized that it doesn't matter if a country is ruled by a dictator as long as the standard of living continually increases and a level of stability is achieved. The West in particular can be a little too brash sometimes demonizing other countries for not having general elections when in so many developing nations it actually isn't the most important thing at the moment. 27 Reply @fffuu4444 3 days ago Distorted is a polite remark, more like spreading lies, misinformation and bad mouthing is a more appropriate description of their actual behavior. 49 Reply @margaretliu3409 3 days ago Kishore!!! 👍👍👏👏👏😍😍😍😍💪💪💪💪💪💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝 33 Reply @jimmycool9265 3 days ago the truth shall set you free!❤ 22 Reply @keithtran6517 3 days ago Thanks for sharing the facts about the South China sea and uncovering the Western corrupted media. But despite that the media and the people are still talking about Xinjiang, Tibet, Hong Kong and Taiwan. The reality is, the people of these regions are happier than the people of other countries of the world. Nobody cares about the lives of people of Gaza, Ukraine, and the Middle East. Why? 27 Reply @cb250nighthawk3 3 days ago These couple of days, when I think of China, it's Rednote 🎉 31 Reply @moh2108 3 days ago His answer on dictators and staying in power for a long time really opened my eyes. About the Chinese president continuing indefinitely?? How do outsiders get the right to prescribe the length of office of the leader of any other sovereign nation?? Right now in my city we have a very serious problem in rise of juvenile violent crimes. Problem got so bad we had to ask the feds to intervene and it might slow down for about a month than it goes again. When I am saying juvenile I am talking about under 18. Carjacking and shootings is so out of control there's bulletins in our local news broadcasts warning no different than natural disaster or war. Of a course violence as a whole is almost so frequent is really not any news for me to even speak about it, but if you are one of those that have no clue than just go to any local news online for any city in any state in the US and see for yourself and I gurantee you that a common pattern will be realized to you very very soon. The reason why I specifically mentioned juvenile is because a country that has the future foundation choosing crime over enjoying life tells everything you need to know about the society, hypocracy, narrated conditions of the country from economy to education. So, I would just tell mr kishore to put up his hand and tell those people criticizing or judging about anything to just stop it with your nonsense. I would recommend to maybe make a brochure and outline china vs US "crime, murder, drugs, war last 100 years" and pass it out. It won't be hard to research. 4 Reply @conti-vl6tx 3 days ago A former American ambassador to China and Singapore, his name is Stapleton Roy. He said before at the meeting between Xi Jinping and Obama, Obama raised the subject of South China Sea. Obama asked Xi Jinping that "why are you being so assertive?" And Xi Jinping told Obama that "Okay, if you think this is a problem, why don't both of us agree to delilitarise the South China Sea? Neither China nor U.S will set up military facilities in the South China Sea." Stupidly, US rebuffed that offer and they stepped up naval patrols. So instead of Xi Jinping being duplicitous and having reneged on his promise, he actually made an offer that was rebuffed. This is factually true, but completely unknown by many people around the world 1 Reply @oiossb6894 1 day ago 😜 Another Brilliant Singaporean 😜 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿😍 1 Reply @steventan2550 3 days ago The impending banning of Tik Tok in the US has led to Americans finding out the truth about the real China through Xiao hong su. I am a Canadian, lower-working class person in their thirties, working and living in Canada. I greatly admire the CPC and the accomplishments of the Chinese people. To me, Mao is a brave hero and the CPC, as your grandfather said, liberated the working class of China from brutal imperialists like the Japanese and the British. However, things were not easy, and China's development was done amongst incredible difficult circumstances. At times, mistakes were made, common people suffered. However, without a doubt, China and Chinese people have greatly benefitted from the revolution and the leadership of the party. I honestly believe China has a bright future, as long as the US government doesn't try to interfere with China too much. Thank you for showing your grandfather's candid thoughts, as well as your own. This was wonderful to watch. 376 Reply 54 replies @JJr-ce3vv 1 year ago Thank you for sharing your grandfather's life experiences. This video provides a fair and rational commentary on his contributions to China's rise and the challenging times during China's struggles. Assessing historical figures, whether it be Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Mao Zedong, or Zhou Enlai, requires considering the historical context of their respective periods. My grandfather, a national capitalist, belonged to the political category of national industrial and commercial workers. After liberation, he faced criticism, lost his property, and passed away shortly thereafter at the age of 60. Before his death, he expressed to my father that he could see China developing and prospering, emphasizing that the well-being of the common people is the only hope for the nation's prosperity. This reflects the perspective of a national capitalist on the relationship between individual and national interests. My father, younger than your grandfather, graduated in aeronautical engineering, specializing in aircraft engines. While your grandfather earned 22 yuan a month, my father earned 72 yuan a month, consistently emphasizing the need to reciprocate the threefold salary granted to technical personnel compared to ordinary workers. He later received a national science and technology award in his role as one of the design engineers. 49 Reply 5 replies @klebatman 1 year ago This was so refreshing compared to the usual one-direction documentary about that period of struggle. As Chinese, I admit we do have problems on variour sectors of the society, but if that is the reason one wants to totally deny his Country, I have to say that kind of person is no better living in anywhere else outside China. What i am trying to say is that you always should first love the Country where you come from then you can have the qualification to criticize it. Never forget the root and blood. 116 Reply 13 replies @brianbrown4858 1 year ago (edited) Your videos continue to illuminate Chinese history and culture. Especially for those in the West. I was a student in Wuhan in 1990, people seemed a bit reluctant to speak to us laowais back then, given recent events, so I never got to know too many local people. It was so nice to hear some Wuhan accent again. The city has changed so much since then! I hope more people can see and share similar personal stories. The way the west demonizes China as an enemy, if they could see these and realise we're all basically the same with the same hopes and feelings, then maybe there could be less hatred and "othering". Thanks for sharing! 67 Reply 2 replies @cgfc-qv5gk 1 year ago 86 Reply 8 replies @Klstfcm 1 year ago I almost stood up to give you a round of applause at the end - that was fantastic! You were missed, you hadn't uploaded videos in a while and you came back with this. Bravo! Your grandfather's story is fascinating, and so is your perspective on that entire era. There is an author and doctor called Han Suyin, and I've been compiling on my channel some of the interviews I've found of hers. Starting in the the 1960s she was telling the world this same perspective, that this revolution was an economic experiment that had succeeded, and that it would not have been possible without Mao. If it wasn't for Mao, China "would be still governed by the warlords, or be a puppet state of Russia, it would be worse than Latin America". "And that it was during this time that the people to whom Mao said "dare to speak! dare to think! dare to do!" began to dare". Truly a fascinating video -- thank you for sharing your granddad's views and history with us. Cheers! 93 Reply 14 replies @masegraye 11 months ago Incredible production. The western world took almost 200 years with it's industrial revolution. That gives you a lot of time to adapt. China did it in just a few decades. That included the migration of people from the countryside to the cities. That's an awful lot of change to absorb in just 30 or 40 years. But China did it. That last scene though shows you it doesn't matter what country you're from, when the younger generation is sitting around the dining table with the older generation the ultimate question is - "how come you're not married yet?" 17 Reply 6 replies @aak72537 1 year ago Wow, the production value of that video, more like film, was amazing! Congratulations on an excellent video. 20 Reply @pietersmith9474 1 year ago (edited) If you ask the older generation, like my grandmother in-law, they love Mao. Your grandfather hinted at the same thing. He said he could get randomly beaten before Mao. Ask him how rich China was then. Do you think China would be the same without Mao, who laid the groundwork, and Xiaoping, who continued Mao's work? India took a different path. Where is it now? If the CPC hadn't taken over, China now would be more backwards than India, it wouldn't be the prosperous country it is now. And the great famine - do you know who solved it? Uncle Yuan - wholly a product of Mao's era. Communism destroyed the famines - famine was a regular occurance before the CPC took over, there was one big one after and now there are no more. It is only the people who don't have any experience with China before 1949 who seem to feel "complicated". Try just being proud. You have no idea how amazing China's continued development is. Yes, there were mistakes made - as your grandfather explained, but the people raised themselves from ignorance and absolute poverty. It's absolutely not the free market that made China prosperous - again, look at India (oh, India has corruption, etc - ok, well why doesn’t China have that corruption?). Just try being grateful. 64 Reply 6 replies @Neuvari 1 year ago without people like your grandfather who fought so hard in china's worst time, there will be no prosper china like today, i admired your grandfather really, he is a hero and also all those people who stays to make china a better place, thank you for this content, this is really a great one! 13 Reply @forgettohaveaname2954 1 year ago Great documentary, a journalist, an interviewee with a rich personal experience which in a large scale combined with the history of the country👍 13 Reply @jforozco12 1 year ago Your grandad and most of the men and women of his generation gave you a beautiful prosperous country as an inheritance. Unfortunately, what is almost always missing when recollecting Mao's period is the TOTAL ECONOMIC SANCTIONS imposed on the PRC by the US. The harmful and destructive effects of total economic sanctions can be seen today in places like Venezuela, North Korea. The tragic failures during this period was not all Mao's. The Mighty West have ensured we disremember the cruelties it imposed on hundreds of millions of already impoverished people. 46 Reply 18 replies @vidalmateos3416 5 months ago Such pure channel❤ 2 Reply @luckarl 1 year ago Very well documented. For me, as a Canadian in my 30s navigating my own complicated relationship with my country and the moral conviction and perspectives of those in my parents’ and grandparents’ generation, I appreciate how you let him speak his own words. Especially at the end where his views produce discouragement and anxiety for those of us trying to find our own way. I feel like the more I understand these earlier generations and remember that, while they feel right about their decisions and that, because they overcame pain and hardship, we should find contentment through taking a path already laid by them, we have our own circumstances today and we should navigate them with respect both for them and for ourselves. My early education positioned the CPC in a purely negative light, and your videos but especially this one provides helpful perspective in understanding the necessary nuances and identifying differing narratives. Also, your production/editing just gets better and better—fantastic work on not just the content but also the presentation! 7 Reply 1 reply @travelwithfawn 1 year ago So glad to see another video from you! Your relationship with your grandad is remarkable and the way you linked that history to your today was elegantly done- nice one!! 5 Reply @unifieddynasty 1 year ago Excellently crafted video. A large portion of the famine was avoidable, and plenty of blame can go to many government officials all the way at the top and down to the village level. Virtually every single family in China suffered during that period, and to an extent there is lingering resentment or at least sorrow and regret. Simultaneously, the context matters. They largely had good intentions. They wanted China to rapidly industrialize so that China can become strong and the Chinese people can prosper. They, the people and the party, zealously wanted this. They, with their insufficient scientific understanding, wanted more than nature could allow. They, with their ideologically naive and nascent administrative skill, wanted more than the people could provide. They failed and the people suffered. And they learned from their failure. And we continue to see the results. On this last point, there is a sobering study that I like to refer to, from the renowned Indian economist Amartya Sen: "Finally, it is important to note that despite the gigantic size of excess mortality in the Chinese famine, the extra mortality in India from regular deprivation in normal times vastly overshadows the former. Comparing India's death rate of 12 per thousand with China's of 7 per thousand, and applying that difference to the Indian population of 781 million in 1986, we get an estimate of excess normal mortality in India of 3.9 million per year. This implies that every eight years or so more people die in India because of its higher regular death rate than died in China in the gigantic famine of 1958–61. India seems to manage to fill its cupboard with more skeletons every eight years than China put there in its years of shame." 40 Reply 4 replies @tomjensen618 1 year ago Thanks Siming. It reveals the complexity and diversity behind Chinese society, especially as perceived by people of different generations. As a 30-something, well-educated person living in China, I used to be very angry at the system and had a lot of complaints. I still do, even now, but over the past years I have come to realize that I probably just stand for only a very small group, and my father’s and my grandfather’s generation, may have very different thoughts from mine, and this is because we experienced different stages of China and therefore have different views of history. Your video reminds us of these facts again: there is no country like China in the world, where older generations were born in abject poverty while younger generations live in affluence, and all of them are still living in the same land, at the same time. 2 Reply @terryandrews49 1 year ago The Chinese achievement of progressing from an oppressive feudal state to arguably the most advanced economy in the world during a single lifetime is miraculous. It has done so whilst also passing through every stage of the industrial Revolution, the atomic age into the communication age, as one smooth progression. This is an omelette that inevitably necessitated the breaking of many eggs. However it has resulted in a country that has achieved excellence in every way. Including world leading infrastructure, economy and leading scientific advancement in almost every field. All within three generations. Nothing is perfect in this world, but change is inevitable. And with China's ability to plan for the long term. The chances are every problem will be addressed in due course. 3 Reply @ll00000000ll 5 months ago 票證制度是物質不充裕時,為了保證大多人不死於匱乏的無奈之選。 1 Reply @xiyushiliuguang 1 year ago my parents entered Wuhan University just one year before culture revolutionary began. they met there and married after they graduated. they were both from poor pensant families, one in Jiangsu, the other in Sichuan, and became engineers after graduation. I must say you grandad does have a reflective language. He just doesn't use fancy words. Oftentimes we think great reasoning comes from verbosity and grandiloquence. Turns out it doesn't. Actually, getting your message across with everyday words and using old sayings like the one about the dog that won't leave her master because he's poor, is a great sign of wisdom. Grandad points out his truth beyond his own ego. He tells his story but he doesn't make it about him. His story is about the people he loved and the country he served. 5 Reply @SamSam-eq5uc 4 months ago Just started watching your videos. Very well done, and so far Ive watched 4 of your videos. My grandparents from my mother side were from poor class and they are peasants while my grandparents from my father side were from upper class. My great grandfather was a government official at that time owning some money. During the time in 1960s (cultural Revolution), my father’s family was ruined. How did it change my life of my dad and even change my life of me and my siblings? I was educated about his tough life and my grand father’s life in 1960s. e.g. my family was ruined and our food were controlled. For most of time my grand fathers were bullied by others in the villages e.g. he was not given enough food for the amount he was supposed to give. During my childhood’ eduction, my dad wished me to have a better life in the future. To be honest, I haven’t gone through the life as my dad or my granddad went through. I did feel sad about them but these tough time did not become the motivation for me to study hard as my dad wished. Did my dad hate China? I guess he didn’t have such feeling. My dad was an ordinary person without joining any parties. In 1980s, there were lots of opportunities for all Chinese to gain bright future just like my dad. My dad worked hard and studied hard for better life even though he dropped out of school. My family immigrated to Canada for more than twenty years now, but we still keep Chinese citizenship. My parent emigrated for my better life. I respect what happened in the past and still love China. My family have gone too much and we might be the people to say China is doing right or not as victims of the Cultural Revolution or other activities. 2 Reply 2 replies @mateusitiyama 11 months ago First time viewer here. I'm intrigued by the possibility of delving deeper into the subject of gender issues and the status of women in China today, particularly in comparison with China's past, Western countries, as well as their allies such as Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and India, along with other global regions. I sense that the accomplishments of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in this realm might be underrepresented or intentionally overlooked by Western nations and the global mainstream media. 2 Reply @josepablolunasanchez1283 1 year ago (edited) All the problems China had and still have, come from cultural glitches and behaviors. * When The British empire attacked in the first battles and China lost, local government officials were concerned and to save face they said that they won. Later the emperor must have realized that was not true. * During Mao's time, local governments had to meet a production quota of food. Many did not make it, but to save face, they reported all targets were met. So Mao disposed of food as if reported numbers were true. It happened that these numbers were not true. Mao was a soldier, not an administrator. So starvation took place and probably he did not like the lies as there was phantom food in the books that did not exist to feed the citizens. * During the recent housing crisis where houses were not finished or delivered, many households decided not to pay for a house they are not living in, and that affected local government revenue. A recent CCP audit revealed $12 billion in fake revenue reported by local governments to save face. Do you notice a pattern? Western media makes China look like a chaotic country that is about to collapse, and at the same time it is a dangerous enemy that is buying farming land in USA. The current system looks more like imperial China and less like the tropes of western media about political systems. So China is a mixture of ancient discipline and chaotic recent past. 3 Reply @kennethwillaimkhoo3007 1 month ago Loved the story of your grandad. It was so poor and devastated by the civil war and the Japanese invasion and sanctioned by the the US and western countries. That's the reason that when the communists took over, the country has no money and no resources. This resulted in famine and poverty. Before the communists took over, China was a feudal society where the landlords and the rich oppressed the poor people. That's why the ordinary people supported Mao. He liberated the people from foreign control and from the oppression of the landlords and wealthy class. Luckily for China that in the late 70's,the US decided to establish closer relationship in order to weaken the Soviet Union. And luckily for China, Mao passed away and a visionary and courageous leader Deng Xiao Ping took over and changed its course to Capitalism with Chinese characteristics. It only took the Chinese less than 4 decades to surpass Japan and many western countries. The Chinese are resilient and hardworking people. Once they are given the opportunity, they will make the most of it. It has had a long history of struggles, and the Mao years were no exception. China has had to walk a difficult path to get to where it is today. However, ignorant and racist Westerners belittle China's history. They take every opportunity to criticise China's past. They refuse to understand China's journey and why China has become the greatest nation on earth today. Consider this: Since 1979 when China opened up to the world, China has risen from total impoverishment to the world's largest economy by purchasing power parity in only 35 years. And she did this without firing a shot! No other world power in human history has risen so large, so quickly, and so peacefully. That's why it's known as the China Miracle. Consider this: No other country garners as much political support from the people as China does. According to the 2023 Edelman Trust Barometer, 89% of Chinese trust their government compared to 56% for France, 51% for Canada, 47% for Germany, 46% for Italy, 42% for USA, 37% for UK, 36% for Spain, and 33% for Japan. A November 2019 Ipsos survey shows that 94 percent of Chinese believe their country is on the right track. According to the Global Happiness 2023 survey from Ipsos, China is the happiest country in the world at 91% compared to 76% for USA, 74% for Canada and France, and 70% for UK. According to Ash Center at Harvard Kennedy School in 2020, 95.5% of Chinese are satisfied with their government. A 2019 UC San Diego study shows a high level of satisfaction among the Chinese across a range of aspects up to 95 percent. According to Latana’s Democracy Perception Index 2023, China is the 6th most democratic nation on earth, well ahead of Germany, Spain, Canada, Italy, UK, USA, France, and Japan. The only people who are qualified to judge whether or not a country is democratic are the people being governed in that country. China is a peaceful and benevolent nation. It is admired and respected by most of the world, at least, outside of the collective West. Let's stop all the China hate in Western media. 3 Reply 1 reply @barrywong4327 4 months ago I think it’s easy to look back with hindsight and be critical of the Mao era. We have to be cognizant of the difficulties China was under when the PRC was born. China had been torn apart by a century of ruthless and brutal western colonialism and imperialism; a decade of war against the Japanese occupation, only to be followed by several years of civil war. The country was broke, economically and emotionally. What Mao did was to cleanse those demons once and for all and rebuild the soul of the country. The country kept its sovereignty and dignity, did not sell out to the western political and economic pressure. No doubt it was extremely hard for all Chinese people. What we ought to celebrate is the fact that the China that ultimately emerged was a much stronger, wiser and confident nation. Siming, your grandpa represents the best quality of the Chinese people — pragmatic, humble, resilient, deep love and devotion to his country through the toughest of circumstances. I'm not Chinese, but I have lived in China for almost 3 decades. Your perspective is interesting to me because it is the perspective of a very young person, not because it is the perspective of a Chinese person. When I first visited China, it was the late 80s, and economic reforms had been underway for only 10 years. It was mostly visible in rural areas, where markets overflowed with goods and many had started small businesses, sometimes cooperatives, making cotton quilts, or rope from rice straw. Society was still relatively similar to what it was like in your grandfather's time. Regular shops had neither Coca Cola, coffee or toilet paper, instead we had to go to special shops to get that. My conversations with older people over the years have been similar to those with your grandfather: People were just swept up in the mood of the time, without even the thought that it could have been any other way. People may lament the hard times, but looking back from the good times, it hurts much less. It's easier to brush it off as just a few bad memories because life is better now. Perhaps you can take a walk down to White Swan hotel on Shamian Island and imagine when it was built: It was a gleaming wonder, towering over all other buildings in Guangzhou, a sign of better days ahead. And perhaps you can think of some other thing that is new in today's Guangzhou and think about whether that foreshadows the future of your city and country. Reply @jamescolyn5960 1 year ago Excellent short overview of China's recent 7 decades. Follow your dreams. Reply @yangyu9990 1 year ago When you grandpa started talking about the difficulty of finding a partner in your 30s compared to 20s I really felt that 😂 On my last trip to visit family in 浠水, my aunty took me to see the place where she grew up with my father and family in the 60s. A block of cramped, abandoned blocks and reminisced about how they used to burn coal to stay warm in the winter, and the thick black smoke that would fill up the poorly ventilated building and make you choke if you stood up too tall. I realise how comedic it is that we in the west ask why they do not resent the CCP for the authoritarian top-down control or a political system that isn't democratic. It's simply because the times they lived in did not afford them those luxury of thoughts when everyday was a battle of survival against entropy in conditions that wouldn't pass modern day audits for livestock housing. Could you blame them for not wanting to revolt against the very government that brought the country out of the literal dark ages within three generations? I certainly couldn't. Thanks for making these videos and sharing your grandfather's story. Your reflection inspires me to reflect as well. The perspective of your grandfather and your family's background has greater credibility than any other materials that are all based on deductions. What you have are all truths because that it is what your family experienced. What we can do as 3rd party listners are to hope that more such information will be a available and listen and reflect on them before having any conjectures about a community. In the Philippines, we have our own experiences. Being under the rule of dictatorship. Based on stories of my grandmother, she saw only the good of that era. But there are people who also are sharing horrific stories about that time. We should not minimize those pains since we cannot know what is true or not aside from those we personally know. At the end of the day, our current lives is impacted by what happened in the past, but we should live our lives striving to do what is good and right. May God guide us all. Even though he put in the hard work, it was the party and the country that gave him the opportunities he had. If he was to "leave China" for France, it would be a betrayal. The education and the work your grandad did wasn't only to his own benefit but ultimately to the Chinese people. It would be like the Chinese people growing a plant from a seed to seedling into a semi-mature plant, only have it plucked and planted in foreign soil no longer benefiting those that initially put in the hard work. 1 Reply 1 reply @frankng4574 1 year ago Starving was true, but not everywhere was like that. The suffering and incredible hard work who forge the prosperity of the current generation it's closer than in other countries, especially in the west. I do not know nothing of my grands (except they were children of poor Italian peasants who migrate to Argentina in the early 1900s) and the gap between their struggles (far easier than those of your grandad, Argentina was a rich mostly empty country in that era) and my childhood it's to blur to leave me an experience like the Chinese people have. He got an education, a job, a life far better, than he would have had if the pre-war Poland continued with it's capitalist social inequalities and remnants of feudal social order. Yet this man has never joined the Party, and one time, I was told the story, they tried to induct him to serve as a reservist in riot police (ZOMO, infamous particurarly in the 80s) and he refused, though it cost him dearly (he never talk about the details). He was a very hard-working and honest man and I admire him deeply. Through his perspective I dare to say, that the even 'proletariat' of Poland itself, the workers and peasants, never were really red, their heart lied elsewhere and they perceived evil and untruth where it was perpetrated by the Party. Once I got something out from my grandmother, about the stalinist times in Poland, not much really, only that everyone was afraid, and she didn't have even the proper shoes. Her grandfather, otherwise a kind man, would grow dim on the face on very mention of the 'bolsheviks' as he called them. Among other things, during the war he got robbed at gunpoint by soviet red-army soldiers. For my own observations, I ride a bicycle a little bit around my city, seeing a lot of ordinary, little vilages. In roughly every third village there is some stone with names of the civilian people murdered by the Germans in WW2, but not only the Germans, there are also names of these shot by NKVD, or subservient to Moscov red secret police of postwar Poland. A lot of names. And my own parents share a memory of a bleak country, with nothing in he shops, with no hope for better future, because in 1981 the Party decided to use the military to supress dissent and the reds clung to power for another decade in a economically ruined country. Sorry, but that is the historic memory of ordinary Polish people about communism: it is a murderous tyrrany, brainwashing people and promoting the worst of human nature, founded on theft and embracement of violence. Again, sorry, but that's the tale that gets every person who is willing to listen to the elders in Poland. But if anyone were to say China is communist, that means one is living in history.. Those which are ethnic chinese have the most capitalistic mindset. We enjoy praying to god of fortunes. Reply @LHITShappy 11 months ago In my case, my mum's family actually have had a bit of love/hate relationship with CCP China. Basically, both of my maternal great-grandparents came from a wealthy and influential family in Guangdong originally, and they were basically landlords in their local areas before the CCP took over. And during the civil war, my great-grandfather was a footsoldier fighting for Kuomintang, when the war ended he was arrested by the Red Army and eventually died in prison. However, around this period, many family members or relatives had their home looted or worse beaten to death, just because they were landlords. On the one hand, my grandfather, being the eldest child in the family, ended up joining the Red Army in order to save his family from being blacklisted by the newly formed CCP. He even fought for the CCP during the Korean War, but then during the Cultural Revolution, he was prosecuted by some uneducated nefarious members of the infamous Red Guard for being a chemist aka 知识分子. Luckily, my grandfather managed to survive in the aftermath of the Cultural Revolution, but his whole personality changed for the worst and became quite violent. But as time went on, my grandfather was slowly recovering from his PTSD and ended up 'forgiving' the CCP, probably because he saw that CCP China has learned from its past mistakes, and has been on the rise since the 90s. 1 Reply 2 replies @yoongzy 1 year ago Damn, your grandad has literally a hidden museum in his backyard! 2 Reply @kitsura 1 year ago Happy New Year Siming! We have been inundated with narratives that yearn for liberalism and oppose the Communist Party, presenting only a fragment of the story rather than the complete picture. Incorporating your grandfather's viewpoint lends a more comprehensive narrative. During Mao Zedong's era, in order to fulfill the promise of "letting the poor people stand up and become their own masters," there was indeed a deliberate suppression of the upper class from the Republic of China era, or political persecution from their perspective. However, in the impoverished China of that time, those who originally held high social status constituted only a small portion of China's total population. For the majority of ordinary people like your grandfather, if they continued to live under the system of the Republic of China, they would likely remain at the bottom of society forever. The Chinese Communist Party provided them with an opportunity to change their lives, enabling them to live self-reliantly and with dignity. Where in China prosperity seems to be shared by all. In Western countries we see growing monopolies (and prices, but salaries not so), rising 'freedom' to acquire weapons, drugs, 'freedom' to have several jobs to afford rent and food. Control of investment funds and corporations over the social and economic life of individuals (as in the recent dismissals of people who demonstrate against the acts of war of the USA and its 'allies' in the world), reduction in health and safety controls by government offices, etc etc." So, i'm not sure, if you want China to have more 'freedom' like western countries do, or not. Nothing can ever justify the acts of taking other people’s LIFES and personal properties and make other people’s personal properties their own. If the landlord really abuse the farmers, the correct way is to established a fair legal system to sue those landlords instead of taking away their personal properties. What about the teachers died in the cultural Revolution? They don’t have lands? They just express different opinions and were still prosecuted. The hyper-fixation on cities means the only way to enjoy high speed internet or decent jobs is to move into one. Land is scarce and rent is high though, which lures employees into a lifestyle of debt. A better model would be smaller towns where people can have their own land and house, with plenty of jobs to choose from. A British druglord had an idea to bring the silver back. He needed the help of British fleet to sell his stuff inside of China. And that is how opium wars started. China got filled of addicts. The weakened imperial system had the last emperor ending his ruling at the beginning of 20th century. Then warlords took control in a lawless land. Chiang Kai Shek managed to join all the warlords to rebuild China as one nation. Then Mao came and executed all dealers and ended the supply, and sent addicts to mandatory rehab and killed the demand. End of the drug war. The rest of the story you know. In 1979 globalists wanted China's cheap labor and this is how the former empire rebirth started. The west believed that as it was defeated, it would behave as a colony, but no. Despite all the suffering, it still had the DNA of an empire in its people. It has the chaos of troubled times, but the discipline of a former empire. China is still around because people felt it had a future and those who could leave, even if they were disowned, could always be the prodigal son welcomed home again. A country is not only an expression of geography and culture; its also a state of the human mind. I thought the Marxist explanation human history is driven by material factors is far from the truth; its people who shape history and change it. I don’t like any society that reduces man to being a mere cog in a machine. We need free will, critical appreciation and freedom to make a better life for ourselves and for others. Let’s be fair to China; its progress has been uneven, painful and dramatic but it eventually will realise the ideals which I mentioned, they’re not political, all human beings have such dreams and we should wish the country and its people the best. Reply @sergiomardinefraulob9803 1 year ago Good intentions aren't enough. Obviouly, Mao involuntarily killed endless millions. His successors were responsible for China success, not him. Land distribution do not necessarily yield better production. Dry years occurs everywhere, i don't think it could justify so great starvation. China seems to have started exceptional growth after Mao's policy was changed... However, due to their ineptitude, the terrible experiments of the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution destroyed many lives. Deng, after returning to party favour, had a vision which brought China to where she stands today. Your grandparent’s and parent’s were the 九九六 generations and are to be celebrated for their hard work. But, the days of marriage before 27 are over - declining marriage and birth rates are evidence of this. Add to these the aging population, 躺平 and 摆烂 and it’s easy to be disheartened. India did not have the Great Leap Forward, India did not have the Cultural Revolution, and it did not destroy traditional culture. It did not resist U.S. aggression and aid Korea or resist U.S. aggression and aid Vietnam. India is not anti-Soviet, has no political movements, does not persecute intellectuals, etc. India is awesome. India has avoided all the mistakes of Chairman Mao. Therefore, India is perfect. why? The answer can only be that Indians are smarter than Chinese people, and Indian civilization is smarter than Chinese civilization. When it comes to reform and opening up specifically, every Indian leader is Deng Xiaoping Because Deng Xiaoping did not avoid even one of Chairman Mao's mistakes, let alone avoid all of Chairman Mao's mistakes. Therefore, every Indian leader is 100 million times smarter than Deng Xiaoping. 2 Reply 6 replies @patrickpoulin3742 11 months ago You learn nothing from this video. Reply @nonrepublicrat 1 year ago The "great famine": was NOT a natural disaster. It was the result of stealing all land and resources away from those people who knew how to farm. Under communism there is no motivation to work because everything would be stolen by the government anyway. 70,000,000-100,000,000 Chinese people died under Mao's cruel and brutal dictatorship. In most parts of China, almost all the people there are still living in terrible poverty. Shanghai today looks modern, but most of China is still extremely poor and life is still very hopeless. And nearly everything that represented genuine Chinese culture was destroyed by Mao with the help of brainwashed children in communist military uniforms. 1 Reply 7 replies @zhangqing6088 11 months ago It’s Terrible that so many people think mao is a hero!😨 please! please the people who think so look up the real history ! 1 Reply 1 reply @michaeltse321 1 year ago You sound entitled lol.
