Everyone except China is underestimating the importance of global south. China doesn't want to fight USA by uniting with Russia, this is reflected by the UN votes, China always vote in alignment with global south, which results in voting against Russia occasionally. Global South have much bigger market than Russia, a stronger Global South will distract USA more effectively than a stronger Russia, because while Russia could potentially pair up with USA, there's no way USA would ever form an alliance with Global South. By helping Global South, China could maintain a stable market when western market and russian market become unwelcoming. When China helps Africa to a point where United Africa become a threat to US dominance, the US pressure on China will finally be distracted and resolved, and this process of modernization of global south will at least take one hundred year to fully accomplish. That's why Chinese officials are always talking about their hundred year plan, and why Chinese always say "the method of a quick victory is also the method of a quick defeat". The rapid decline of USA is actually a bad thing for China because that would make the hundred year plan become more unstable. China need US for a stable global order, although China doesn't like this order, China won't propose a new order and enforce that Chinese order on every global south country, because China doesn't want to repeat the same mistake. That's why you can see China are being very quiet when US are talking to Russia, because China want US to maintain global stability even at the cost of losing Russia. In comparison, Europe can't stay quiet for a single minute when they realized Trump is talking to Putin, because a stable and growing Global South/Russia is more dangerous to Europe than US due to closer geographic distance.

Their visit to China in 1972 was not an active strategy. They just had no progress in the Vietnam War, so they wanted to go to China for peace. Vietnam forced the United States to negotiate with China's support, not on their own.

While I am cautiously optimistic about the relationship of Russia and China, IMO I feel some trepidation. Ben has raised rational points about why Russia has a complementary relationship with China and has no reason to trust the US and all that. The underlying problem though which I think warrants concern is all politics and geopolitics are not rational. And Ben also raised the point that there are some people in the Russian halls of power who attracted to Trump's deal which proves this point of irrationality. With regards to both the US and Russia, there is still a base of supporters on both sides whom both the political class surrounding Trump and Putin caters to, via media, who view the current climate as a clash of civilizations and they view Russia as a 'traditional Christian' nation that needs to be integrate with the west against the non-Christian, non-European world which China leads. To give a case study, there are also still a lot of unanswered questions about what happened in Syria for example, with some speculating if a deal had been struck between the West/NATO/Turkey/Israel and Russia/Iran to pull out (analyst Laith Marouf certainly thinks Russia backstabbed Assad and the Syrian people). IF such a case is true (which we don't know), then I really hope this is not a foreshadow of things to come concerning the relationship between Russia, China vis-a-vis the US. I don't claim to read what's inside the minds of Moscow, Beijing or Washington. But it would be awfully stupid of the Russians to fully trust the US and West and switch to their side against China, given all they have been through, regardless if they share certain cultural values with some Westerners or not. Certainly the US and West's covert funding of problems in Chechnya (notably the Beslan school crisis) all the way up to Navalny should still be in the minds of Putin and other leaders. But again even with all these rational reasons, does the political class of any country ever behave in a rational manner? Again I do agree with Ben it's hard to tell the future, but such reports should still be a basis for providing good insight for what the future potentially holds.
