I lived in Germany when the Berlin wall was being build. If the US "defeated" then, they sure hid it. I was there from the time I was fourteen until Kennedy was killed and all dependants were sent home. The threat of de-coupling, when found to be more harmful to the U.S. economy, was later changed to de-risking which, in effect, means de-coupling at a later date. De-coupling or de-risking, the U.S. still needs to send its high-ranking officials to Beijing asking for financial assistance to rescue the sinking American system while at the same time they talked to Chinese officials from a position of strength as if the U.S. is still "the leader" of the world. Militarily, the retreats from the First Island chain to the Second at Guam and the Third in Hawaii show the U.S. is no longer the warmongering hegemon it once was. U.S. defense chief and all his generals from the air force to the navy spoke of decimating the Chinese army with their mighty firepower. Perhaps all of them forgot an old adage that says "barking dogs don't bite." The louder their war rhetoric, the more cold feet they show the world -- just like the "rock-solid" and "iron-clad" support to the Philippines in its disputes with China in the South China Sea where U.S. warships were no where to be seen while Philippine "boats" carrying American and European reporters were sprayed with water cannons. It is easy to unite people when everyone is getting richer but quite another when the reverse is true.
