China and the World

I have visited both Taiwan and China recently. I am amazed that despite the almost daily news reports of China encroaching into Taiwan airspace, something like war is going to happen very soon, but I saw hordes of Taiwanese tourists in China, visiting China happily, some even work in China, including their chip engineers helping China to develop their own chips. And in an election in Taiwan recently, the friendlier-to-China factions form the majority in their parliament.

China can take Taiwan easily because America doesn't want to against a super power. I think the 2024 Zhuhai Airshow is a show to the world how powerful the Chinese military technology is.

If Prof Goldstein has any influence over US policy on China , the best advice he can give is just that since Taipei is more than 10,000 km from San Francisco and that Taiwan is a part of the ancestral homeland of the Chinese people. All these talk of nuclear war and the end of the world would be meaningless and we can all have a cup of coffee and go home if only the Americans would stay out of what is essentially not their problem.

As an outsider looking into HK during those recent chaotic periods, I can't see how China was involved in the mess or responsible for it. I thought the whole saga started with the murder of HK woman in Taiwan by the man who went there with her. He is a HK citizen and managed to leave Taiwan and cannot be extricated officially as they do not have that kind of arrangement. It is from here that this interests took root as they wanted to have the law passed that set off the episode on with the help of outsider's interference coming from the NGO, diplomats and organized groups that inflamed HK and rioting. Although the Chinese garrison is there but they never did nothing and it's puzzling to put the blame on China but without mentioning the US(politicians were there) UK activists and the NGO.

He doesn't define what is winning here. Is it defeat Taiwan or defeat US military? Since China military readiness for Taiwan is always targeting US military, it is never about Taiwan. Nobody thinks Taiwan stand a chance. There is no need for this pretending smart guy to tell Taiwan would be lost within 6 to 10 weeks.

Taiwan is approximately 160 km from the southeast coast of China and share a common dialect with the people from the Fujian province. Reason why China is so concerned with Taiwan is that it fears that the US administration is using it as a launching pad to get into the mainland . US is always meddling with other nations’ internal affairs and it has never fully succeeded in taking over the Chinese mainland. It fails in the Korean, the Vietnam wars and recently in the war against Afghanistan.By keeping Taiwan on its agenda with its seventh fleet in the straits of Taiwan, it hopes to regain its strategic position in the Asian Pacific region , after all Taiwan is the first island chain in the series of islands in the SouthChina seas and with its military bases from Australia,the Phillipines, South Korea and Japan, it has already formed a noose around China. It’s main aim is to strangle the Chinese economy as 80 percent of China’s trades pass through the SCS. Hence the importance of Taiwan to the Chinese is fundamental.

Sorry Hammi. When the man disagrees with a common set of arguments for American interest in Taiwan, surely you could ask him to explain further rather than looking at your paper and reading prepared questions.... Vitally, we need to know why your great guest, and i respect his experience and knowledge, and I happen to agree with him, believes that there isn't an economic or military argument for America to defend Taiwan! That's the whole point! If there isn't a reason to, i need to get my bum out of Taiwan asap! Well, considering that I agree with him I do! I've lived in Taiwan for 10 years and China for 3 and speak mandarin. Here are my arguments. 1. America has S Korean and its own chips. As long as the factories are not in Chinese hands, America is still ahead. However, the chances that China has a good deal of the tech it needs to produce top or near top chips is very very high. I say this because I have not seen strong will for independence. The Taiwanese do not want war and the vast marjoity will not fight in the streets like the Ukrainians. They want peace, business, stability and hotpot! 2. America must be fully capable of detecting subs in the seas if they have carrier fleets roaming around all year long. I mean the Pacific is almost half the surface of the earth but still, I'm guessing that the tech is there?! Also, America has Yoneguni, micronesia, okinawa and 5 bases in the Philipines. Taiwan is a dud really. 3. The cost of defending Taiwan is immense, particularly because its military lacks capability to defend itself and the people lack the will to defend themselves. To go to war with China puts 13 percent of Amercian GDP at risk whereas Taiwan is a far smaller percentage. Also, there is the cost in military equipment and troops.

Although pretty well all of the world accepts that Taiwan is a part of China, it also is important for America to project its dominance over the oceans including the South China Sea, and to constrain China through the first, second and third island chains. Taiwan is part of this. What would happen if China or Russia became increasingly strong? Commercial interests in the US could suffer and Americans wouldn’t want that! Starting wars with Russia and China might be good ways for the US to try to limit their power.
